Matter Valley
The Matter Valley (or Mattertal) is a stunning valley in the Swiss Alps, located in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. It is famous for its breathtaking scenery and its access to some of the most iconic mountains in the Alps, particularly the Matterhorn, one of the most recognized peaks in the world. The Matter Valley runs north-south, extending from the town of Visp in the Rhône Valley to the southern end at Zermatt, the famous alpine resort town at the foot of the Matterhorn. It is a part of the Pennine Alps, a mountain range that forms the natural border between Switzerland and Italy. The Matter Valley is characterized by its steep sides, with high mountain peaks on either side, including several 4,000-meter peaks such as Monte Rosa, Weisshorn, and Dom. The valley is largely glaciated, with numerous glaciers flowing down from the surrounding mountains, including the Gorner Glacier, the second-largest glacier in the Alps.
