Haleakala Highway

 Haleakala Highway

Continuing where Piilani Highway ended, this ride goes along West slope of Haleakala - the volcano you see on your left is Mauna Kahalawai, which forms the west part of the Maui island. Mauna Kahalawai which means "holding house of water," is approximately 1.7 million years old and forms a much eroded shield volcano. Since its last eruption approximately 320,000 years ago, the West Maui Mountains have undergone substantial stream erosion. At 5,788 feet (1,764 m) elevation it’s only about half the height of Haleakala (10,023 feet).
