Ride Country Gerlos Pass (old road)  Strava Segment

The Gerlos Pass has a rich history, evolving from a simple mule track to a modern alpine road, it has been a strategic point for trade between the Zillertal valley and the Salzburg area for centuries. The initial road across the Gerlos Pass was constructed in 1630. This route was built on the site of an old mule track to transport gold found in the Ziller Valley to Salzburg. The Gerlos Alpine Road, also known as Gerlos Strasse, was constructed between 1960 and 1962. Franz Wallack, who also planned the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, designed the road. Parallel to the Gerlos Pass road is the old Gerlos road. It is narrower and bumpier, with a gradient of 17% and several hairpin bends.
