Brenner Pass (North side)
The Brenner Pass is a mountain pass through the Alps that forms the border between Italy and Austria. At 4,511 feet (1,375 meters), it is one of the lowest and most important passes in the Eastern Alpine range. The pass separates the Ötztal and Zillertal Alps. The Brenner Pass is one of the main entrances to Italy from the north and has been the principal road between the Eastern Alps in Germany and the Po River valley of Italy since Roman times. Since the 14th century, it has been one of Europe’s great trade routes. The central section of the Brenner Pass has a four-lane motorway and railway tracks connecting Bozen/Bolzano in the south and Innsbruck to the north. The Brenner Railway, completed from 1853 to 1867, was the first trans-Alpine railway without a major tunnel and at a high altitude. Brenner Pass is part of Ötztaler Cycle Marathon which is considered one of the toughest cycling marathons in the world.
