Passo Di Costalunga from Bolzano
If you follow the almost 110 km long Dolomite road coming from the tranquil village of Nova Levante, you will pass the 1,745 meter high Passo di Costalunga, one of the most important east-west connections to Vigo di Fassa or Canazei. The Passo di Costalunga (Karerpass) connects South Tyrol with the Trentino region and is - albeit sometimes quite busy - definitely worth the crossing due to its magnificent view of the Rosengarten and the Latemar massif. The toll-free pass road stretches over the ridge in 16 hairpin bends and 17 kilometers in length. You also pass the picturesque Lago di Carezza (Karersee), which lies a little below the top of the pass in a wooded area. The Lago di Carezza is certainly one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in the Dolomites. The best way to experience the idyll of the emerald green water is early in the morning, when it is still as smooth as a mirror and untouched by the streams of tourists who later pass by. The Karersee has not only given rise to many sagas and legends, it is also a popular motif for numerous painters and writers from different eras.
