Waipoli (Haleakala)
Waipoli Road leaves Route 377 high in Kula, on Haleakala’s south-west slope, Maui, Hawaii, USA, and climbs by switchbacks into the Kula Forest Reserve, where the pavement ends at about 6,400 ft. The cycling site PJAMM ranks the full climb from near sea level 11th in the United States, with its steepest quarter-mile at 18.5%.
The ride climbs Route 377 past Kula Lodge and along Kekaulike Avenue, then turns onto Waipoli Road and its switchbacks. At the top lies the 21,000-acre Kula Forest Reserve. The land around Polipoli was bare until the 1930s, when it was replanted with redwood, pine, cypress and eucalyptus. The ride ends where the pavement stops and the forest begins, with Polipoli Spring about 5 km beyond.
