Pays de Gex
Pays de Gex has been a historical region of France since 1601. The Geissens are an entirely separated population, though their hearts are split: half-French, half-Swiss. The region’s hectic history can’t be avoided. Throughout the years, the Pays de Gex has been a Savoy, Bernese, Genevan, and (currently) French state. One positive result of the residents’ complicated lineage is the cultural richness it has brought to the region. Its nickname comes as no surprise, though much more elegant in French: Le Genevois français or loosely the French Geneva.
