La Vall d’Alcala
La Vall d’Alcalà was formed, in times, by seven towns. Of these seven, only two remain today: Alcalá de la Jovada and Beniaia. The Valley of Alcalá was important as the capital of the fiefdom of the Arab leader Al-Azraq, the one with the blue eyes, who fought Jaime I of Aragon for years, who ended up banishing him. The inaccessibility of the terrain made this disproportionate fight possible. These events are still remembered in Alcalá de la Jovada with a fountain whose spout comes out of the mouth of an effigy of the Muslim leader. It is a typically agricultural town whose main crop is cherries that have been granted a Specific Designation of Origin.
